Stephen N. Elliott

Stephen N. Elliott, PhD, co-author of the Social Skills Improvement System (SSiS) family of products, earned his doctorate in Educational Psychology at Arizona State University in 1980. He is currently a professor of Special Education and the Dunn Family Chair of Educational and Psychological Assessment at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.

He directs Vanderbilt’s Learning Sciences Institute and Peabody College’s Interdisciplinary Program in Educational Psychology. He also frequently consults with educators on the assessment and instruction of K–12 students.

Dr. Elliott has authored more than 135 journal articles, 50 books or book chapters, and several widely used behavior-rating scales. His research and writing focuses on assessment of children’s social skills and academic competence, development of accommodations and alternate assessment methods for evaluating the academic performance of students with disabilities, and design and evaluation of school-based screening and intervention systems for students at risk academically. 

Dr. Elliott received the Lightner Witmer Award in 1984 from the American Psychological Association (APA). He also was elected to Fellow status in four APA divisions and was appointed Editor of School Psychology Review (1984–1990) for the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

He has served on the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Education Goals 2000, the U.S. Department of Education’s Technical Work Group for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and the National Alternate Assessment Study’s Technical Advisory Panel.
